The designer dips the «La Dao» or literally «wax knife» (a kind of fountain pen) into the hot beeswax and applies it onto the cloth. The wax within the knife is only liquid for a few seconds before, the knife needs to be dipped again into the hot wax. Designs are usually executed free hand. The iconography and mythologies behind it is passed down through generations of woman. The most common symbols represented are the mother butterfly, the dragon, the bird, the fish, the drum. Some symbols are more decorative such as flowers. Self representation came much later in time,
